Dear reader,

What a year! Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Thailand... the Asian catastrophe experience has been absolutely astonishing, hasn't it? Ordinarily one would have thought that in the absence of a major US hurricane the loss experience for any given year would be within reasonable parameters, but 2011 just goes to show how difficult the claims landscape now is for the industry.

Enormous losses can now come from some of the unlikeliest places. Don't forget, Thailand wasn't a modelled loss!...
