Transocean wins Deepwater liability ruling

Rig operator Transocean has won an important legal victory in the US as part of its ongoing dispute with BP after a federal judge ruled this week that it is not liable for pollution claims arising from the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

US District Judge Carl Barbier said on Thursday that BP must uphold a clause in its contract with Transocean that would shield the Swiss-based driller from compensatory damage claims related to the 2010 incident.
