The World Cup party has begun, after months of build-up and worry over key players injured on the eve of the tournament such as Germany's Michael Ballack, Portugal's Nani and England's Rio Ferdinand.

Despite the anxiety over injuries, event organiser Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) will have felt a much greater sense of relief that its main money-spinner was off and running.
