This really is turning out to be a hell of a year for losses, with the blow out and explosion at the Transocean Deepwater Horizon rig, which killed 11 people, now looking like it will cost the industry in excess of $1bn.

Already questions are being asked about why the systems in use on the Deepwater Horizon couldn't prevent the spill, which, if left unchecked could match the 11m gallons spilt from the Exxon Valdez within less than...
