Record first half losses approach $24bn

Catastrophe losses in the first half of the year could reach a record $24bn as the full impact of the Chilean earthquake, windstorms and major man-made losses such as Deepwater Horizon and the Bangkok riots becomes clear.

The $24bn figure follows analysis by Inside FAC and correlates with the $22bn assessment of first half natural catastrophe losses made by Munich Re. The reinsurer's figure does not include man-made losses.
