Hurricane Earl fails to bite

Despite predictions that it could cost the industry up to $500mn, Hurricane Earl eventually dissipated with no major damage reported. It had been shaping up to be one of the most significant named storms of the season in terms of losses.

With storms Fiona and Gaston also weakening in the first week of September as they traversed the Atlantic and failed to reach tropical storm strength by 7 September, (re)insurers were still left unscathed by a major US hurricane.
