Dear Reader,

Are they ever going to stop? I thought the claims experience in the first quarter was bad enough given Windstorm Xynthia and the Chilean earthquake - losses which now look like they will easily cost the industry in the region of at least $11bn if we take conservative estimates of an $8bn loss for Chile and a $3bn loss for Xynthia.

Yet, the second quarter has also served up some truly horrible man-made losses in the form of...
