EMEA protectionism is impacting insurance

Protectionist measures introduced by some insurance regulators in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region are impacting international (re)insurers' ability to conduct business in certain emerging markets, according to a new report by AM Best.

The rating agency said regulators in EMEA emerging markets, including the Commonwealth of Independent States, had been taking protectionist measures in a bid to safeguard local policyholders and insurance carriers.

Measures have included: compulsory domestic cessions to a state reinsurer; restrictions on foreign ownership...
