Catastrophe losses $24bn in 2009 says Swiss Re

According to Swiss Re's reseach unit Sigma, insured losses for the year to date have fallen dramatically compared to last year and are an estimated at $24bn, with natural catastrophes accounting for $21bn and man-made claims approximately $3bn.

Last year Sigma estimated that natural catastrophe insured losses were $42bn and there were over $7bn in man-made losses.

The total economic cost of natural catastrophes and man-made disasters so far in 2009 has been $52bn compared to $267bn the previous year,...
