Cat losses reach $222bn in 2010

The economic cost of nat cats and manmade disasters in 2010 is triple that of a year ago, according to Swiss Re's sigma team.

The total estimated cost to the insurance industry is expected to be $36bn, an increase of 34 percent on the previous year. This estimate could rise if the ongoing European winter storm season proves costly.

Of the $36bn total, approximately $31bn is accounted for by natural catastrophes, while man-made disasters triggered additional claims of approximately $5bn...
